Disney's first official gay character appeared in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, in which LeFou (Josh Gad) has a crush on Gaston (Luke Evans) and dances with another man. The Frozen franchise already boasts two films, a Broadway show, and countless merchandising yet Disney won’t dare to give queer representation in any meaningful way. Sure, they’ll wedge in a pathetic “exclusively gay moment” here or a back-patting “historic” gay character there.
In an exclusive interview withFrozen 2 animator Malerie Walters opened up on what she thought of this theory around the character of Elsa. For Malerie, Elsa is “not defined by. It's true that the theme of finding one's self (it's the title of the song!) has very strong gay narrative associations.
Critics basically called Show Yourself a gay anthem when the movie came out. While Elsa hasn't been deemed gay, Frozen 2 didn't make her straight, either.
